ACL reconstruction05/04/2009 |
What is the preferred option for an acl reconstruct - an allograph or autograph?
The decision to perform ACL reconstruction using allograft (tissue obtained from a genetically non-identical member of the same species as the recipient) vs. autograft (tissue obtained from the same patient who is undergoing ACL reconstruction) is made by the orthopedic surgeon, taking into account details specific to a particular patient.
Although some studies have indicated a higher rate of graft rupture following an allograft, a recent "meta-analysis" found this to be true only for allografts which were irradiated and chemically processed.
An informed choice can be made based on a discussion between the patient and their orthopedist.
