Urinary Disorders

Flomax for Women

05/15/2009

Question:

I recently had to go to the emergency room because I was not able to urinate. I could start, but not finish. I went to a urologist and he perscribed me flomax and had me drink a ton of water to see if I could go. I could but I would like to know what would cause this problem and why would flomax help? Would I have to continue to take this forever? Thank you

Answer:

Usually men after age 50 may have problem with an enlarged prostate which causes voiding dysfunction. In female it has to do with a condition called sphincter detrusor dyssynergy. Response to Flomax suggests bladder outlet obstruction. A urologist can answer your questions.
