Implants versus overdentures

05/04/2009

Question:

will over dentures wear down the bones as a full upper denture eventually does? i know both involve implants, our budget would prefer the overdenture, but not if the long term effects are the same as a full denture, thank you

Answer:

Two implants will preserve the bone in a localized area in the region of the implants. Other areas may continue to lose bone. A two-implant overdenture still rests on tissue, rotates or moves in an anterior posterior direction, and has more maintenance than a five-implant denture. <p />I have treated a few patients with a two-implant denture who later got three more implants. They reported a world of difference.
