What is severe pan sinus disease? What are opacifications? Are asthma and sinus disease often linked together?
Severe pansinusitis indicates that there is infection in all of your sinuses (frontal, maxillary, ethmoid and sphenoid sinuses). Opacifications means the sinus cavities are filled with either infection or tissue (gray which reflects fluid or tissue on CT scan as opposed to black which indicates air). Patients with asthma often have upper respiratory symptoms (i.e., rhinitis that can be complicated by sinusitis). An uncontrolled asthma patient often may have undiagnosed/unrecognized sinusitis that if treated can help improve the asthma.
