Dx of bone bruise, cuboid bone right foot

05/18/2009

Question:

My daughter injured her right foot 6 1/2 months ago. After MRI, doctor diagnosed a "bruise" of her right cuboid bone. After five months with no apparent change in pain level, a cast was placed on her foot for one month. Now, she says the pain is actually worse, in a different location (more toward her small toe)and there is swelling which was not present before the cast. Is this unusual, and is there any other possible complication such as bone or cartilage tissue deterioration? Is there any "average" healing time?

Answer:

This does not sound like a usual course for a bone bruise. While each individual will heal at different rates, 6 ½ months is a long time for there to be no resolution to the pain. I would think further diagnostic studies would be in order to determine a more accurate diagnosis.
