Urinary Tract Cancers |
Atypical and HPV Cells in Urinalysis05/26/2009 |
Last two urinalysis showed atypical cells. There was no blood or infection, however HPV was also found in urine. What does this mean? Can the presence of HPV in urinalysis cause atpical cells in urinalysis?
1) "Atypical cells" is ambivalent and does not indicate diagnosis of cancer
2) If bladder or urothelial cancer is a concern, then FISH (fluorescent in situ hybridization) test of cells in the urine has been shown to be sensitive and specific to bladder cancer
3) Inflammation may cause atypical cells
4) I presume that HPV in the urine may cause inflammation, however, I am not familiar with HPV being cultured in the urine and therefore can not provide insight into this condition which I believe is rare.
Hope this helps. You can ask urologist about obtaining FISH testing.
