Hypoechoic mass on abdominal ultrasound

06/01/2009

Question:

I am 45 year old, relatively fit and healthy woman. I had an ultrasound to check reasons for abnormal monthly bleeding - all seemed normal there, but what it turned up as a black mass around 5 cm long in my abdomen. At the first ultrasound it was not peristaltic, and the sonographer was not sure what it was. The ultrasound was repeated 6 weeks later, and the mass appeared similar, but was peristalsing. Is this something to sorry about? My doctor has dismissed it, and said its nothing important. I have had a slight change in bowel habits over the past few months, which I have been ignoring, but this has got me slightly worried that there may be something going on that needs looking at. Should I ask for a second opinion? Thanks.

Answer:

You may want a second opinion, or a second imaging modality like a CT scan.
