What does it mean to have a smoothly marginated, noncalcified 12x12x13mm lung nodule?
Thank you for your question. In the process of evaluating a newly identified lung nodule, there are several factors that we must take into consideration: 1. How long has the nodule been present? Nodules that have been present and unchanged for over two years tend to be benign 2. What is the size of the nodule? Larger nodules have a higher risk for malignancy. 3. What is the appearance of the nodule? Does it have smooth or irregular borders? 4. Is the nodule calcified or not?
Depending on these factors we then consider the next best course of action which may be biopsy, follow up imaging or no further imaging. Obviously, there are several causes of pulmonary nodules. Therefore, it is important to discuss the next steps with your provider.
