Urinary and Genital Disorders (Children)

UTI

06/25/2009

Question:

My one year old daughter has had fevers (100.4-101.9) for over 3 weeks now. She had a urinalysis done and they detected a UTI. She was given antibiotics (bactrim) for it. It`s been 4 days since the antibiotics were finished and she is still having these fevers, she`s restless, and just doesnt seem to act herself. What do you think is going on?

Answer:

Unfortunately, there is insufficient information to provide a definitive opinion. It would be worthwhile having another urine culture to be certain the infection is cleared. Generally an ultrasound study of the kidneys is ordered and sometimes a kidney scan is performed to determine whether there is any birth defect of the urinary tract that might be predisposing to the infection.
