Delay in periods after giving birth to a baby

06/24/2009

Question:

i have given birth to a baby in January this year.i got periods twice after that.lastly i got periods in march but now i am worried about it.i am not pregnant again.please suggest any medicine.i feed my child too.

Answer:

It is very common to have a delayed or irregular menstrual cycle after having a baby; especially if you are breastfeeding. As long as you are breastfeeding, your cycle may not come regularly or at all in the first 6 months or so.

However, you should know that it is still possible to get pregnant during this time. There are not medicines that we would recommend to restart your cycle. If you are interested in contraception, you could talk with your doctor about birth control pills that would regulate your cycle.

If after you have stopped breastfeeding and you are more that a year after childbirth and your cycles still have not returned, you should then see your doctor to determine the reasons.
