Treatment for polyps noted on endometrial bio

06/29/2009

Question:

What is the current treatment for polyps which are found on an endometrial biopsy? There was no endometrial hyperplasia found on the biopsy. The polyps are asymptomatic. Biopsy was performed due to 9mm thickness of endometrial area.

Answer:

Endometrial polyps are benign growths of glandular tissue that form on the lining of the uterus. Depending on their size and location, they can either be asymptomatic (causing no symptoms) or cause abnormal bleeding such as very heavy periods or bleeding in between periods.

Treatment is usually dependent on whether there are symptoms and what risks a woman has that she would develop a growth that could be cancerous (for example, older age, overweight, family history of cancer). A small polyp found incidentally in a young woman that is causing no problems may be left alone.
