I was recently diagnosed via two ct scans with a 1.3 centimeter smoothly marginated, noncalcified lung nodule. I am a non smoker (used to smoke as a younger person) and 53 years of age. What are the possibilities of malignancy in this nodule?

Thank you for your question. There are several factors to consider in your risk assessment:

1) how long has this nodule been present? Are there older ct scans or chest x-rays demonstrating this lesion?

2) Age

3) size of the nodule

4) characteristics of the nodule.

There are several potential causes for nodules that can be either benign or malignant. Given the size and appearance of the nodule as you describe, the best approach would be to discuss with your provider a plan which may include a biopsy, possible PET scan to clarify risk for malignancy and/or very close follow-up with serial imaging.
