06/24/2009

Question:

Dear Experts,

There are so many birth control pill for woman today. Beside contraceptive effect, Diane 35 (Cyproterone and Ethinylestradiol 35 mcg) is effective against acne condition.

Do all birth control pills (beside Diane-35) have this effect (reduce or treat acne) too? If so, is it because Ethinylestradiol or progesterone? Is the anti-acne of birth control pill related to the dose of Ethinylestradiol or both hormones or do they have the same effect no matter what the dose of the hormone is?

Answer:

Yes, most birth control pills have a similar effect on improving acne. They do this by increasing the binding of testosterone thereby reducing its effect. Both the estrogen and the progestin play a role in this issue.
