Ear, Nose, and Throat Disorders

Colonized MRSA in nose...

06/30/2009

Question:

In May 09 I went to an ENT for a throat issue. While I was there she did an endoscopy procedure and then a nasal culture. The nasal culture came back the first time for Strep and I was given Clindamycin for 10 days. Then on the f/u visit she took a 2nd nasal culture which came back with MRSA. She wanted to put me on Vandamycin. But I went to an infectious disease specialist who told me this type of colonized MRSA only in the nose is not treated that way. He gave me Mupirocin ointment and told me to put it in my nose 2x a day for 7 days. Then on f/u he told me I have to continue doing the Mupicorin treatment 2x a day for 7 days for June, July and August. After the first treatment in May I had another ENT do a nasal culture which came back normal. Do you think it`s really necessary for me to take this antibiotic for such a long time??? I don`t want to take medicine that I don`t need to take. Thank you.

Answer:

Based on your history and negative repeat culture I would not have my patient continue the mupirocin. With that being said, I would contact your infectious disease physician and inform him or her of the negative culture and get their opinion as to stop or not.
