Cholesterol and medication

07/02/2009

Question:

My total Cholesterol is 222; my LDL is 146; my HDL is 52; and my Triglycerides is 120. Because of diet and excercise they have come down a little each year. My doctor wants to put me on Lipitor. What are your thoughts about medication or should I continue diet and excercise?

Answer:

There are many factors to consider when initiating a patient on treatment for high cholesterol or triglycerides. Your total cholesterol and LDL are elevated, but whether or not they require treatment depends on several things, including your age, your gender, and whether you have any other risk factors for cardiovascular disease.

To read more about risk factors that may help you determine if therapy is necessary, please visit the American Heart Association's website for specific recommendations for cholesterol levels (www.americanheart.org/presenter.jhtml?identifier=4500).
