Ear, Nose, and Throat Disorders

Ear Pain, Muffled Sounds, Ringing, Itching

06/30/2009

Question:

In my right ear I have been having ear pain from the inside of my ear down into my throat. It is even painful when I swallow. I also have been experiencing bouts of muffled sound (feels like something covering my ear), high pitched sounds that only I hear, drainage from my ear down my throat, and itching inside my ear. It almost feels like something crawling around inside. I talked to my general physician and he said there was redness and swelling but did not prescribe any medication. He thought it might be a viral infection and would go away on its own. Should I go to an ENT doctor? What could be causing these symptoms?

Answer:

It is definitely worthwhile going to see an ENT physician to evaluate for possible eustachian tube dysfunction and to get a hearing test. Often there can be treatment to alleviate your symptoms.
