COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease)

End-stage emphysema and vomiting

07/06/2009

Question:

My father has been suffering with this disease for 20 years. He is end stage now, and bed-ridden. Lately, he has been vomiting-- not the flu, but having bouts of diahrea and vomiting even after a bland diet. I`m a RT but have never heard of the symptom as one of end stage emph. He vomits about 1/week and for about 2-4 times each. Any correlation?

Answer:

The GI symptoms you describe are not typical of emphysema. However, they could be side effects of the medication theophylline. If your father is on theophylline, his level should be checked.
