Infertility

Ph in semen analysis

08/11/2009

Question:

My husbands semen analysis was completely normal but his ph was 8.5 a little high. Does a high ph affect fertlity and is there anything we can do to lower it? He also abstained from ejaculation 7 days prior to his test, could this cause a high ph?

Answer:

Usually high PH of ejaculate suggests inflammation and/or infection in ejaculatory system. However, if semen analysis does not show WBC'S then it has nothing to do with bacterial infection. Alkaline environment is detrimental for sperm survival. To reduce the PH of seminal fluid, which in turn increases the volume, a man can use Vitamin C or onion.
