Pregnancy09/08/2009 |
I went to see my gyn today and he saw a foetal pole and yolk sac, but no foetal heartbeat. I am 6 weeks pregnant. Is it too early to detect the heartbeat? On the findings, the report also said `Early IUP at 6 weeks`. What does that mean? Thank you very much for your advice.
IUP stands for intrauterine pregnancy. That means there is a pregnancy in the uterus and not elsewhere like an ectopic pregnancy. A heartbeat can be seen as early as 6 weeks but more reliably at 7 weeks. Most times the plan is to repeat the ultrasound in a week to confirm that the pregnancy is developing normally and this is not an early miscarriage.
