Pregnancy

Possible miscarriage?

09/21/2009

Question:

My peiod was a few days late so I thought I was pregnant, but the day i was going to buy a home pregnancy test I started spotting so I waited then the next day I started bleed real heavy. I dont watch my periods real closly but I know about when it comes and I know it was late which never happens. Also I always clot huge clots every month! Like quarter sized clots. Is there something wrong with me? And I cramp so bad that I sit in the shower for hours sometimes crying, medicine does nothing. And I`ve always done this since I very first started at 13.

Answer:

An early miscarriage can sometimes be mistaken for a very heavy period, because the heavy bleeding and cramping may occur only shortly after a period is missed, and often before a woman knows that she is pregnant.  If there is a question of pregnancy, a home urine pregnancy test should be positive as soon as a period is missed, though it may become negative again very soon after the miscarriage has occurred.

If menstrual periods are consistently heavy and painful to the degree that you describe, there may be a medical condition involved.  Some explanations for such heavy periods would be a uterine tumor (for example, fibroids), excessive glandular tissue (eg adenomyosis) or a problem with your blood's ability to clot.  Depending on the problem and your medical history, such conditions may be treated with anti-inflammatory pain medicines, hormonal medication, an intrauterine device, or surgery.  Be sure to see a medical professional who can see if one of these treatments is appropriate.
