Fetus Has Large Kidney09/24/2009 |
Just had 21 week scan and found one kidney is larger than the other. Also, one side of the heart is larger than the other. Could there be serious problem as the baby is lying sideways in my pelvis? Could it just be squashed?
Finding an enlarged kidney on prenatal US is very common, approximately 1 in 50. It could be a sign of a minor kidney malformation, but in severe cases surgery may be necessary after the baby is born. If no hydronephrosis was discovered, it is unlikely that there is a serious problem with you baby, but I would be happy to discuss follow-up exam findings with you.
