I am patient of myasthenia gravis for long time,25 years, i am 57years old,I gained a lot of weight because I can not do exercises, even brisk walking. I take mestinon,60mg three times a day. Please help me and tell me how toreduce weight. You can even answer me on my email address. Thanks
Weight reduction is a major problem and there is no guaranteed solution. It would presumptuous of me to pretend that I have the answer. Having said that, I do advise that food selection rather than exercise is key for patients with MG. (This is the most important factor for anyone struggling with weight - with or without MG.) By recognizing that the issue is how much we eat rather than the MG, we are in a position to effect a change. I do recommend the following:
1) keep an accurate record of your weight (daily weights and weekly average)
2) learn about calories and serving size (with an inexpensive calorie guide)
3) substitute lower calorie foods for high calorie food and reduce amount consumed in order to lose about 2 pounds per month.
It is also important for many to set a reachable, healthy target. A lot of patients will become much healthier by reducing their weight by 10-15%. Hope this helps.
