Prism Glasses Stop Working the Longer I Wear

10/05/2009

Question:

I have double vision for which I have been given prism glasses. They have had to make me 4 pairs because my vision keeps changing. The last pair they made me do work when I put them on, but only for about 15 minutes and then I have the double vision again, but with the glasses on. If I try to take the glasses off the double vision is so severe I can`t see to function. The glasses also make me sick to my stomach and make me feel very dizzy. What do I do?

Answer:

Return to your eye doctor and ask him or her:

(1) What is the cause of my double vision? and
(2) Is this condition stable or unstable? and
(3) Is this condition a temporary or permanent problem?

Prism glasses only work when the underlying cause of the double vision is identified, stable, and permanent.

If the amount of prism needed to achieve clear, comfortable, and single vision is changeable, you may need to sacrifice binocular vision by frosting or fogging one lens in your glasses to help the brain ignore the image from that eye.
