10/27/2009

Question:

Hi. I am 22 years old and infected with neck tuberculosis from past month. I have been diognoised and started the treatment 2 days back. I spend most of my time with my boyfriend and he demands for the smootch. Will this lead him to the problem? Right now I have made distance from him. How long should I keep him away from me and the smootch? Please give me the right advice I love him a lot.

Answer:

Please ask your doctor to discuss the need for respiratory isolation precautions in your case. Your doctor knows the particulars of your illness and can give you the best advice about whether or not your TB is in a contagious form. In general, TB is an airborne infectious disease that is most commonly spread from tuberculous lung disease when a patient coughs, sneezes, talks or sings. Taking your TB medications, all of them every day, is the best way to cure TB and to no longer be contagious to others. For some patients, until the medications are known to be working well, it is advisable to be isolated for a time, for the protection of others.
