COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease)

Emphysema

11/23/2009

Question:

Is there a connection between moderate Emphysema and tachardyia with irregular pulse? It is not the result of medication because it these symptoms occur throughout the day with no explanation. I did a stress test last year and there is some mild blockage - Dr. was not concerned. Is this an Emphysema problem or do I need to see a heart specialist? I am 75 years old, and was diag. with Emphysema 5 years ago.

Answer:

There could be a connection between emphysema and an irregular pulse.  This could be related to abnormal blood oxygen levels, medication, or strain on the right side of the heart secondary to the underlying lung disease.  You should discuss this further with your doctor.
