thyroid grave`s disease,nutrition&health11/09/2009 |
i was diagnosed about a yr ago with grave`s disease, prior to that,a few months before i had gained 20lbs in a month, with no diet changes(i drink diet soda, and have not been eating more,)my doctor, couldnt explain it,even with dieting i couldnt lose the weight.then came the grave`s disease,i had lost over 35lbs in a month,i was placed on methimizole,(3 aday, but sometimes i go days without taking it due to forgetting to take em)i have since gained the weight back, almost at 155 now,(5lbs shy of what i used to be,when i first gained)and this happened mostly in a month, then a few lbs every week after, again my doc says they dont know why im gaining,i still drink diet, still eat what i used to(i work nights,so i ussually eat cereal in am, a sandwich or cereal for lunch(sometimes a subway sub,or small chili,or hot dog.,and then a regular sized dinner,at work i bring diet soda, water, cereal,or graham crackers,)we dont always eat desert at home,a few times a week maybe, and i try to stay at a small portion,i am on my feet several hrs a night at work,so im not sure why i cant lose this weight,or why im even gaining,??i need to get some regular lab work as well as a free t3,and such, again, but is it possible i have both antibodies for hyperthroidism and hypothyroidism?i read some people have both, and can gain when the hypo are active,or lose when hyper are active?or do i need to do further blood work?is there a thyroid diet?what would you recomend for a 29yr old female 5`0(154lbs now).for the daily calorie intake to try and lose?i thought maybe the 1200calorie?is there any websites with sample 1200 calorie or so daily diet menu for reference??? any tips,or advice/answers are helpful!thank you.
Thanks for your question. It's possible that since you have missed your thyroid medication on and off, it is not working as effectively as it should be. I cannot answer your question about "antibodies for hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism", and whether or not you need more blood work. These are questions for your doctor.
As for your diet, I suggest you ask your doctor for a referral to a Registered Dietitian to evaluate your eating and exercise habits. I cannot legally 'prescribe' a diet for you online. Research indicates that many people consume more calories than they really think they do.
To locate an RD, go to the American Dietetic Association web site and click on the link for "find a nutrition professional". Link is below. Good luck!
