Night Kidney Pain

10/29/2009

Question:

Hello, I have read other posts about kidney pain at night. I too have had this kidney pain at night. It has to do with lying down for a certain amount of time. I have had lots of tests done for infections and stones and everything has come back negative.

It has been going on for about 8 months now and I am exhausted as I only get about 4-5 hours of sleep a night now and have to hit the couch sitting up to relieve the pain every night no exceptions. If I drink more before bed, I get up earlier.

I just had a lasix renogram done to check the flow of my kidneys and it came back normal they say. When the lasix was given the pain in my left kidney was very intense and it was also very intense when I went to the bathroom with a very full bladder two times after the test.

My Nephrologist is saying I can try a stint to help drain my left kidney and see if that helps. I will probably try that but was just wondering if there were any other ideas out there? Thanks

Answer:

The symptoms can be related to a Ureteral Pelcic Junction obstruction or other obstruction to the ureter but normally the xrays and lasix renogram are diagnostic. A stent would help to answer the question but may cause some urgency and frequency. I would defer to your treating doctor.
