How Painful is Removal of Stent After ESLW

How painful is the removal of the stent after ESLW and am I foolish to request not to have one after the treatment? Is it flexible or solid and is it normal to be removed via a string left attached?

A string can be left in place if the stent is only needed for several days and then used to remove the stent by simply pulling on the string. If the stent is needed for longer periods, then cystoscopy (placing a scope in the bladder) is required to remove the stent. The decision to place a stent is based on the size of the stone and the probability that the fragments may block the ureter after treatment and cause pain or obstruction. You should discuss the pros and cons of placing a stent with your doctor prior to the procedure. The stent is made of a plastic like material.
