My father was diagnosed with prostate cancer approximately six years ago. He underwent hormone treatments and radiation. Although the treatments seemed successful, his PSA levels have been increasing slowly in the last six months to a year. Recently a prostate biopsy was performed and the results were negative however his PSA level had increased yet again. What does this typically mean? The doctor is suggesting that he start on the hormone injections again to keep the PSA levels in check.

Answer:

It depends how hight the PSA has been increasing. It could indicate that there is still cancer present in the prostate or outside the prostate. In some instances a CT of the pelvis and a bone scan may be indicated. It may be appropriate to restart the hormones. You certainly want to speak directly with the medical oncologist or urologist to discuss this.
