Undeveloped Penis in 3 Year Old Son

12/18/2009

Question:

We are in the process of adopting 2 children, 1 of whom is a 3 year old boy. When bathing him I saw his private area and his penis does not look normal. It`s inverted and his scrotum isn`t normal either. The problem is that they will not be permanently in our home for another month and I have questions and concerns. He has to use the bathroom all the time and I was wondering if this could be part of the problem?

Answer:

The inverted or hidden penis sometimes needs a minor surgical reconstructive procedure, but often they grow out of it. It is unlikely that the urinary frequency is related to the hidden penis. Frequency in a 3-year-old boy is common and is related to an immature bladder and will resolve over time.
