Need for H1N1 Flu Shot?

12/30/2009

Question:

I am 75 years of age. I have had the regular flu shot this year. Expect to visit my daughter in five days. She currently has the flu, presumably H1N1. She has a son living with her who may well catch the flu that she currently has. Would it be a good idea to get an H1N1 flu shot if that can be arranged? Per the newspapers, there are now ample supplies available for everyone.

Answer:

I am always in favor of vaccination unless there is any allergy or other medical reason not to receive a vaccination.

You should be aware, however, that receiving the vaccine will not provide immediate immunity. If you receive the vaccine today, you will not be immune in five days. Immunity typically takes about two weeks from the time of vaccine administration. Keeping that in mind, it still will not hurt to go ahead and receive the vaccine as soon as you can.
