Head and Neck Cancer

Necrotic Lymp Node

01/20/2010

Question:

I found a swollen lymp node on the left side of my throat. I had a biopsy and it had a lot of necrotic tissue. What does this mean?

Answer:

Necrotic tissue means the biopsy shows dead cells and debris but does not give an accurate diagnosis. Both infection/inflammation and cancer related problems can lead to necrosis therefore additional tests or tissue needs to be obtained.
