Conjunctivitis for Mother and Toddler

Question:

I have developed eye infection since last 3 days. My eyes hurts a lot and it is itchy too. The infected eye is reddish now. My doctor has asked me to put cold compress for at least 4 times a day. Today evening I noticed my 3 year old son has also some swelling in eyes. He is a bit cranky and points to the eyes all the time. What should I do for my son to ease the symptoms and to prevent it from getting worse. Does just washing your eyes under warm water work or do we have to do more for this to make it better? Thanks for the advice.

Answer:

There can be several causes for swollen or red eyes. An examination needs to be performed to determine the correct diagnosis and treatment. Please schedule your child with a pediatric eye doctor to determine the best course of action.
