Fixing Tongue Thrusting

02/18/2010

Question:

My dentist says that my tongue is touching my teeth when I eat causing a gap between my two front teeth. Can this problem be treated with retainers? If so, how long would it take to fix it?

Answer:

Spaces between the upper front teeth can be difficult to close. It is unlikely that the tongue is causing this space. It is possible that the space could be closed with retainers.

As far as time, I would think it would take between 6 months to a year to correct and might require a combination of tooth movement and cosmetic bonding of the teeth to change the shape and/or size.
