I have terrible knee pain whenever I do any type of excercise- even simple excercises like lunges or cycling? What can I do to strengthen my knee so I can go running?
Some simple exercises you could try to strengthen your knees could be body weight lunges or step-ups. Additionally, you could try wall squats or chair squats(going from a seated position in a chair to a standing position). If you have difficulties with simpler exercises like these I would consult your physician to determine if further evaluation is needed.
