Regarding Diet

02/23/2010

Question:

My mom is a TB and acute CKD patient. Her age is about 46yrs. Please kindly give me some suggestions regarding diet and medication. The medication under use is rifampcin 450mg,  pyrazinamide 500mg, INH 300mg, benadon 40mg, oflox 200mg,  along with these she is having amlogard 10mg, sodamint, folvite, storvas 10mg. I want information particularly on diet because as a TB patient she has to take more of proteins, but due to CKD what type of diet she should take? Thanks.

Answer:

It is important for your mom to be well-nourished to treat her TB. However, the meds used to treat TB are generally very effective, so the diet is less important. On the other hand, if her kidney disease is at an advanced stage, then dietary restrictions – especially protein, salt, and potassium restriction – are very important for the management of her kidneys. Is she under the care of a kidney doctor, and is dialysis available for her if she should need it? If so, check with her doctor to see how severe her kidney disease is, what diet they recommend, and how close she is to needing dialysis. Also, be aware that if her kidney disease is advanced, the doses of INH and rifampicin may need to be reduced to half the normal dose.
