Brain Tuberculosis

03/09/2010

Question:

My sister-in-law is five months pregnant. She has been detected having Brain Tuberculosis on 22nd february 2010. She is in the ICU. The treatment is started. We know it is curable but as she is pregnant is it safe to keep the baby? Can baby have any deficiency on birth? kindly guide us.

Answer:

This is a very complicated question that requires consultation with the physicians and the neonatologists taking care of her. Tuberculosis can rarely be spread through the placenta to the fetus. I cannot comment on the chances of this occurring in your situation or the likelihood of problems for the fetus.
