Bladder Sling Surgery-problem

03/25/2010

Question:

I am 58 years old. I had bladder sling surgery 2 years ago due to a prolapsed bladder. The surgery was a success but it didn`t help with my ongoing bladder control. My doctor presecribed detrol first and now I am on velacare. Lately, I have felt the familiar pressure that accompanied my prolapsed bladder problem. I certainly do not want to have a second surgery. What choices do I have besides living with the discomfort?

Answer:

Sling procedure is designed for treatment of urinary incontinence. It is not the procedure to correct bladder prolapse. Voiding difficulties can occur if sling is placed and make the angle of the urethra against the back of bladder more sharp and hence, urinary retention could follow. You need to talk to your surgeon.
