Question:

Hi. I am 29 years old. The last 2 months I have had some tenderness in the left breast. I paid no attention to this because I figured it was hormonal. It never went away. I did a self exam. After finding a lump on my breast I immediately made an appointment. I don`t mess around with things such as this, because of my family history with breast cancer. My mother had cancer at age 31 and now still cancer free. Dr did a full exam and agreed about the lump. However, she found more in the other breast. I have major dimples on my right breast and a small one on the other. I had a ultrasound today and it came out negative. However, I feel almost cheated with the exam. It took her less than a minute on each breast. I was in and out of there in 10 minutes! She seemed in a hurry. She told me it is not unusual for the ultrasound to show nothing. I wont get a mammo for another 2 weeks. Is this normal or what should I think? I am really worried!

Answer:

Obviously, you need to be careful with your family history.  Ultrasounds are very accurate for diagnosing breast abnormalities including cancer at your age as long as they are done by an experienced person.  Assuming that the ultrasound was done properly, then you should be fine.

If you are not comfortable with the examination that you received and the care provided by your current doctor, then get a second opinion.
