Pharmacy and Medications

Pravastatin

03/16/2010

Question:

What time of day do I need to take my medication? I usually drink wine with dinner. Would it be better to take the pill and noon time? Thank you very much.

Answer:

Pravastatin, as with other “statin” drugs, is generally taken with dinner or at bedtime. Because the body produces more cholesterol at night, this class of drug works best when taken in the evening.

If you are limiting yourself to one glass of wine, you should not have a problem taking pravastatin with dinner or at bedtime. However, if you are consuming greater amounts of alcohol, you may have a problem regardless of what time you are taking your medications since both alcohol and statins have the potential to damage the liver.
