Ear, Nose, and Throat Disorders
sclerosed mastoid air cells and soft tissue density in the middle ear cavity is the CT impression. What is the difference between a soft tissue density and a soft tissue density mass? What does it mean?
In cases of chronic mastoiditis or chronic ear infections, a CT scan often shows opaque areas where the mastoid air cells are either filled with soft tissue (typically inflamed lining or mucosa) or fluid. A CT cannot always differentiate between those tissues or fluid in the ear. As usual, its important to get the managing physician's interpretation of the scan and NOT rely solely upon a written/radiologic report. Your ordering physician typically will have a chance to examine the patient and obtain a history to correlate with a scan. A scan alone rarely tells you the whole picture.
