Question:
Can you tell me what chromosome Cystic Fibrosis effects and possible treatments for it?
Answer:
Cystic fibrosis does not affect a chromosome. It is a genetic defect of 1 gene on chromosome 7 that causes cystic fibrosis. The gene makes a protein called the cystic fibrosis transmembrane regulator protein or CFTR. Treatment is aimed at decreasing inflammation, fighting infections that are common in the lungs, and trying to fix the genetic defect which causes thick mucous in the airways and intestines. There are a multitude of treatments that are used and even more that are being studied in clinical trials.
