Eyes Watering

04/19/2010

Question:

When I eat spicy food can you explain why mt eyes water?

Answer:

Spicy foods contain certain compounds that are irritants to the mucous membranes lining the nose, eyes, etc. The spicy compounds found in some of your favorite foods can undergo a chemical interaction with sensory neurons of the body, causing watering of the eyes, a burning sensation, and sometimes even pain!
