Alternative Medication

05/19/2010

Question:

I have been given a perscription for Skelaxin. the drug is very expensive. Is there a generic or similar medication that will do the same job but that would be less expensive?

Answer:

Thank you for contacting Net Wellness. Metaxalone (Skelaxin®) is in a class of medications of centrally acting skeletal muscle relaxants which provide relief through a somewhat relaxation of the skeletal muscle or relief from spasms. Each mediation in this class of medication will have the side effect of drowsiness and dizziness.

The other medications that fall into this class of medications include: cyclobenzaprine, methocarbamol, carisoprodol, baclofen, chlorzoxazone, orphenadrine, and tizanidine. Depending on your symptoms, medical history and medications that you take, one of these medications may be a lesser expensive alternative.

I encourage you to contact your prescriber or have your pharmacist contact your prescriber to suggest an alternative medication. In the event there is not an alternative medication, there is a manufacturer assistance program and co pay assistance card offered through King Pharmaceuticals. http://www.skelaxin.com/skelaxin-coupon.aspx or http://www.needymeds.org/papforms/kingka0225.pdf
