Question:
Can antihistamines be used in a 18mth old with nasal congestion and cough due to excessive mucus?
Answer:
The package labeling on most over-the-counter antihistamines start the dosing at 2 years old. Benadryl (diphenhydramine) recommends 6.25 mg (1/2 teaspoonful) for children 2-6 years old. This dose would also be appropriate for an 18-month-old child.
