GERD More Common When Older?

06/29/2010

Question:

I`m 59 yr old male and very seldom get heartburn or indigestion. But for the past week or two, off and on I get it. I haven`t been eating anything different or taken meds to cause it. What could cause it now, when nothing has changed as far as my diet and medications. Could it be my age?

Answer:

GERD has nothing to do with age as pts of various ages can suffer from it. GERD is more common I patients who have an associated hiatal hernia, which also has nothi9ng to do with age. Stay off soda, spicy foods or eating late. If that doesn’t work oyou may need a short (4 week) course of otc PPI (like prevacid) and see if this improves.
