Relationship Between Sleep Apnea and Sarcoido07/14/2010 |
Are sarcoidosis and sleep apnea related?
Dear Sir/Madam,
Although the data relating sarcoidosis to obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is not of high quality, many sarcoidosis experts are convinced that these two conditions commonly occur together.
Some of the factors that might promote OSA in sarcoidosis patients are the use of medications that cause weight gain (e.g., corticosteroids), inability to exercise (due to impaired lung function), and sarcoidosis involving the upper airways (e.g., sinuses, enlarged lymph nodes in the neck, etc.).
As such, we actively screen our sarcoidosis patients for OSA symptoms, such as loud snoring, awaking from sleep feeling short of breath, witnessed apneas (others observing that you are not breathing while sleeping), day-time sleepiness, morning headaches, high blood pressure, and other symptoms.
