Too Young for Sciatic Problem?
My 16 yr old son attends a strength and conditioning class to prepare for his fall baseball season. After completing a rigorous series of core excercises including situps, scissor leglifts, etc. he developed pain that extends from the top of the pelvis on his left side down through his left buttock. His left leg feels weak and he has dull pain in the back of his left thigh. He has no groin pain however. He describes the center of pain as being about 3 to 4 inches down from the top of his left buttock. In addition to the strength training he has been throwing about 75 pitches 3 times a week as well as hitting in the cages 3 times a week. Might this indicate a sciatic or even a problem with a disk?
Although 16 yrs. old is younger than most patients who have a lumbar disc problem, it could still be possible. A "sciatic" problem which your son may or may not have is usually due to a disc problem. If your son is having any difficulty performing or functioning at a desired level, he should be evaluated by his physician.
