Question:

Can I take prilosec while being on bactrim?

Answer:

Prilosec (omeprazole), which is available without a prescription as Prilosec OTC®, belongs to a class of drugs known as proton pump inhibitors and is used to treat chronic heartburn and other gastrointestinal conditions. Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) is a two-component antibiotic that is prescribed for the treatment of bacterial infections.

As it turns out, it is safe to take Prilosec while being on Bactrim. However, I would advise that you consult your primary care provider or pharmacist if you are considering starting Prilosec to help treat stomach discomfort caused by Bactrim. In this case, you may benefit more from an antacid such as Tums or Mylanta.
