More Time of Day to Take Statins

09/13/2010

Question:

In an earlier question, you addressed the best time of day to take lipitor and zocor. Can you please extend your answer to include pravachol generic?

Answer:

Thank you for the question. The generic name for pravachol is pravastatin. It is one of the medications in the statin family to lower high cholesterol. Similar to Lipitor, you can take pravastatin at any time of the day, with or without food. That means that you will get the same reduction for your high cholesterol level regardless of when you take it in a day or if you take it with or without food. However, you should take it at the same time every day. It takes about 4 weeks to see the maximum effect. So do not stop taking it unless your doctor tells you to do so.
You should contact your doctor right away if you have unexplained muscle pain and weakness, severe and unresolved stomach discomfort or any other unusual symptoms after you start taking this medication. Check with your doctor before you take any new over the counter products such as St John’s Wort or Antacids because these OTC medications might affect the potency of pravastatin.

Feel free to contact us if you have more questions about pravastatin or other statins! Thank you.
